Microsoft Universal Print and Windows Protected Print

Microsoft Universal Print (Universal Print) and Windows Protected Print (WPP) are the latest print technologies from Microsoft. These solutions are designed to provide a more secure and efficient printing environment for Windows users. They make managing your print fleet simpler, reducing risks of data breaches and creating a more unified way of monitoring devices.

Microsoft Universal Print (Universal Print)

A cloud-based service that makes printing easier and more efficient, Universal Print is designed to handle only printing tasks; there is currently no support for copying, faxing or scanning.

The benefits of Universal Print include:·

  • Cloud-based servers: Eliminates need for on-premises servers, simplifying infrastructure and reducing costs.
  • Centralized Management: Manage all print devices securely through your Microsoft Azure Server Management console.
  • Convenience: Print from Internet-connected devices without installing drivers.
  • Scalability: Easily add or remove printers as needed.
  • Microsoft 365 Integration: Seamlessly integrates with OneDrive, SharePoint, and other Microsoft products.
  • Advanced Features: Supports features like pull printing for secure document retrieval.

Most Kyocera devices work directly with Universal Print. For others, you can use the Universal Print Connector, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center. Please refer to our technical whitepaper for additional information.

Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP)

WPP enhances security by eliminating the need for third-party drivers, requiring periodic updates.

The benefits of WPP include:

  • Simplified Printing: No third-party print drivers means simpler setup and reduced potential security risks.
  • Consistent Experience: Ensures a reliable and uniform printing experience across different devices and manufacturers.
  • Compatibility: Works with Kyocera's color and B&W printers and MFPs.
  • Increased Security: Provides enhanced security by using built-in Windows features, reducing the risk of attacks and vulnerabilities.
  • Reduced Management Effort: By removing the need to manage and deploy external print drivers, it simplifies IT management.

Kyocera devices that use Windows 11 version 24H2 and higher are compatible with WPP. For older versions of Windows, the embedded OS printer profile must be used.
